    Kosika
    Percussion Shaker

The Kosika is a traditional African percussion instrument which makes two distinct sounds. By swinging the balls, the Kosika produces a clicking sound or it can be used as a shaker. The instrument is used both to pass the time and in tribal ceremonies. Traditionally, they are made from vine seed pods found in the area and are then filled with sand or small rocks to produce the shaker sound. Then, they are tied together to complete the Kosika. This Kosika is made from durable plastic and rope to provide a longer lasting and louder sounding model than the traditional version.

How to hold the Kosika: Holding one ball in your palm, place the string between your index and middle finger.

    Basic rhythm:
Step 1: Top hit / Bottom hit

Swing the other ball (outer ball) up over your thumb allowing it to make contact with the ball in your palm (inner ball). This is called a top hit. Keep your thumb relaxed. It should not be touching the inner ball. Now let the outer ball swing back the other way, around the back of your fingers and let it hit the inner ball from below. This is called a bottom hit. For now, simply twisting your forearm back and forth will cause this motion to occur.Become comfortable with this motion before moving on to step 2.

    Step 2: Hammer Shake

Using your ring and pinkie fingers, hold the outer ball in your palm as the string wraps around the backof your three fingers. Shake your arm back and forth as if you were hammering a nail into a wall.

    Step 3: Basic Rhythm

While shaking, open your hand and release the bottom ball with your ring and pinkie fingers. The trick is to NOT STOP SHAKING!! If you maintain the "hammer shake", the outer ball will naturally swing back and forth, making contact with the ball in your palm.

NOTE! At this point, there is no need to twist your forearm back and forth. Focus on maintaining the "hammer shake", and let the balls take care of themselves. This is the basic rhythm of the Kosika.
