Robert Jospe: Learn to Groove Book/CD - Fundamentals and Syncopated Patterns for Drum Set and Hand Drums - Learn to Groove is designed to help drummers achieve fluency with syncopated patterns that are associated with dance rhythms from West Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, and the United States. These rhythms constitute some of the basic vocabulary of contemporary Jazz, Latin, Rock and African drumming styles. The fundamentals are focused on the three most common rudiments: the single stroke roll; the double stroke roll; and the parradiddle. The two measure phrases are based on the 3/2 and 2/3 Son and Rumba clave patterns found in Afro-Cuban music as well as the Bossa clave from Brazil. The goal is to flow freely from one rudiment and one pattern to the next, subdividing in eighth notes, triplets, and sixteenth notes over one of four ostinato bass drum and hi-hat patterns. The Clave grooves and Latin Beats incorporate Son and Rumba patters with complimentary percussion parts for the drum set. Polyrhythms and 6/8 grooves are drawn from African dances. The Rock and Swing grooves incorporate Son and Rumba Clave patterns between the bass and snare drum along with ride cymbal patterns. The Learn to Groove book comes with an accompanying DVD. Author Robert Jospe is an accomplished drummer, composer, educator and band leader starting from his days as an active player in the NYC jazz and rock scenes in 1971 after attending NYU. Softcover Book approx. 8" x 11" and 56 pages.
